Deciphering locomotion in reptiles: application of elliptic Fourier transforms to femoral microanatomy

چکیده
Abstract Reptiles represent one of the most diverse groups tetrapod vertebrates. Extant representatives reptiles include lepidosaurs (lizards), testudines (turtles) and archosaurs (crocodiles birds). In particular, they show an important locomotor diversity with bipedal, quadrupedal facultatively bipedal taxa. This is accompanied by substantial microanatomical disparity in limb bones. Although many studies have highlighted link between locomotion bone microstructure, latter has never been quantitatively studied from angular perspective. Indeed, some taxa heterogeneity cross-section. Here we show, using elliptic Fourier transforms statistical analyses integrating phylogeny, how parameters measured on reptilian femoral cross-sections, such as compactness, can be related to this clade. phylogeny appears a significant impact our results, that functional signal exists. bipeds quadrupeds present craniolateral-caudomedial dorsoventral deficit respectively. reflects cross-sectional eccentricity these directions relate forces acting upon femur different postural contexts. work contributes deciphering complex interplay microanatomy reptiles.

Image Enhancement by Elliptic Discrete Fourier Transforms
This paper describes a method of enhancement of grayscale and color image in the frequency domain by the pair of two elliptic discrete Fourier transforms (EDFT). Unlike the traditional discrete Fourier transform (DFT), the EDFT is parameterized and the parameter defines ellipses (not circles) around which the input data are rotated. Methods of the traditional DFT are widely used in image enhanc...

Warp and weft spacing and its coefficient of variation affect the physical properties of fabrics such as fabric hand, frictional and mechanical properties. In this paper the weft and warp spacing and its coefficient of variation for plain weave is calculated using Fourier transforms. Different methods have been used in this work including autocorrelation function. First, two dimensional power s...

متن کاملSparse Generalized Fourier Transforms ∗
Block-diagonalization of sparse equivariant discretization matrices is studied. Such matrices typically arise when partial differential equations that evolve in symmetric geometries are discretized via the finite element method or via finite differences. By considering sparse equivariant matrices as equivariant graphs, we identify a condition for when block-diagonalization via a sparse variant ...
